Dim Sim is a large, thick-skinned dumpling filled with minced pork or beef, cabbage, garlic, and spices, then deep-fried or steamed and served with soy sauce or chili oil. While inspired by traditional Chinese dim sum, the Dim Sim is a distinctly Australian invention — heartier, rougher, and designed as a quick grab-and-go snack.
First created in Melbourne in the 1940s by Chinese-Australian chef William Wing Young, it became a staple in fish and chip shops, footy games, and school canteens, often eaten alongside a meat pie or sausage roll.
