General Tso’s Chicken is a Chinese-American dish made with deep-fried chicken chunks tossed in a bold, sweet-and-spicy sauce made from soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, garlic, and chili peppers. Despite its name, it has no known connection to the real General Tso (Zuo Zongtang) of the Qing Dynasty. The dish was created in the 1970s in New York City, likely by Chef Peng Chang-kuei, a Hunan-born chef who adapted his flavors to suit American tastes. It's now one of the most popular dishes at Chinese takeout restaurants in the U.S.
